The benefits of eating fish
In addition to being appreciated for its culinary qualities, fish is food with very interesting nutritional properties. There are many varieties which can be enjoyed, each with their particular tastes, textures...
One of the most popular classifications is according to fat content, which varies according to the type of fish. On the one hand we have white or lean fish (such as cod, gilthead bream, monkfish, sole, grouper, hake, turbot…) which is very low in fat and has very few calories. On the other hand there is the oily or fatty fish (such as salmon, tuna, swordfish, sardines, anchovies…) which is rich in fat, especially omega 3, a special fat which protects our cardiovascular health.
Nutritionally speaking, fish is characterised by containing high quality proteins, in other words protein of which our bodies can take full advantage. Furthermore, it is easy to digest, so it is also ideal food for children, as long as you are careful to remove the bones. It is also rich in group B vitamins, especially vitamin B12, which is only found in animal products. Furthermore, it is an outstanding source of minerals such as zinc, iodine, phosphorous and selenium, all of which are essential for the body to develop and function correctly.
Fish also includes shellfish such as clams, mussels, prawns, crayfish, oysters... with nutritional properties which are very similar to those of other seafood.
Nutritional recommendations suggest including fish in a varied and balanced diet practically every day. It is advised to eat white fish and shellfish 3 to 4 times a week and oily fish at least 2 to 3 times.
