Organize your fridge to conserve food better

Organizing the fridge properly is essential in order to conserve food better, both from a hygienic and a nutritional point of view. Next we look at some considerations to be taken into account.

Fridges for domestic use aim to maintain food and drinks at low temperatures without freezing them. Fridges of different kinds and with different capacities can be found in the market. A standard fridge of between 300 and 350 litres is recommended for a family of four. It is important to adjust the size to the household needs because these machines consume a lot of energy due, more than anything, to their continuous and permanent use. The most relevant characteristic is the temperature, and although it can vary between 0 and 5 ° C, the appliance should be capable of maintaining the temperature constant even though the outside temperature varies.

With regard to the use of the fridge, here are some tips: adjust to the appropriate temperature of around 5 ° C, leave it open just the time required to get the desired food and make sure you have closed it properly, clean and defrost it from time to time and avoid filling it up too much so that the cold can circulate freely.

With regard to organizing food: it is ideal to cover or store food in well sealed, clean and dry containers to avoid smells and contamination; do not store very hot food because it will increase the temperature of the fridge and everything in it; never mix raw food with cooked food, or mix different kinds of food: we must be especially careful with meat and fish that spill their juices on other food, or with vegetables which loose traces of soil.

With regard to the distribution and placement of food: cooked food which does not need to be reheated (cakes, salads and other cold dishes) should be placed on the top shelf; whilst the food that has already been cooked and needs to be reheated (meat stews, sauces, left-overs…) should be placed on the second shelf. On the contrary, raw food or food which is being defrosted should be placed at the bottom so that there is no risk of it contaminating the other products. Vegetables should be clean and disinfected before they are put away. The drawers provide indirect cold which is ideal for them. The same thing should be done with fruit. The middle shelves are ideal for yogurts, cheese, cold cuts… Finally, drinks, cartons, eggs and other products can be stored in the door.

Most fridges also come with a freezer. It is important to label the food that is being frozen: type and date, to guarantee a good rotation, bearing in mind that the maximum time that domestic freezing lasts is between two and three months.

Lékué has various utensils available which are ideal for conserving food. Some examples are the Cooking Bag (a bag with two functions: it hermetically stores solid or liquid food in the fridge or freezer and always keeps them fresh), suction lids and a stretch tops (they make it possible to conserve food in the fridge easily and hygienically, and are thought out for food which remains in metallic or glass containers and even for portions of fruit or vegetables. Since it is elastic, it can be easily adjusted to any container of different diameters), fresh bags, kitchen cans, aromatic herb preserver, defrosting net, baguette y sandwich buddy, everything necessary for refrigerating and conserving food.
